These
wonderful black mabe pearls are from a relatively new pearl farm
located in the small fishing village of Guaymas, Mexico, on the
mainland shores of the Sea of Cortez. The Perlas de Guaymas pearl
farm was originally started as a research program sponsored by the
University of Mexico and is now acknowledged by many experts as
the source of some of the finest cultured pearls and mabe pearls
in the world.
The native mollusk being utilized is a distant
relative of those in the South Pacific surrounding the Tahitian
Islands and subsequently produces a wonderful range of black pearls
as well as the very unusual golden bronze shown in some of our
pieces on this page. As with the other mabe and blister pearls
in our collection, the unique individual forms of the Mexican
mabes lend themselves very well to the nature of our handcrafted
jewelry designs.
